City Park Players: Pippin
City Park Players Present the Musical - Pippin

August 19 – 29 Thursdays, Fridays and Saturdays at 7:30pm – Sundays at 2:30pm

Pippin is a sort of play, within a play, within a dream? It is a story that is veiled with gossamer ideals and catchy pop tunes from the 1970’s, by Stephen Schwartz, one of the great American composers, who's most recognizable work is his recent hit, Wicked.

Pippin (Malik Victorian) is the earnest, attractive, stubborn, misguided son of Charles/Charlemange (Danny Eudy). He struggles with the burden of his father's fame while trying to find his own place in the world.   His life is further complicated by Fastrada (Rita Smith) his step-mother, who is dedicated to advancing the status of her own son, Lewis (Joe Wright). Advised by his grandmother, Berthe (Darrah Mannix) Pippin eventually meets Catherine (Emily Pears) an attractive, young widow and her son Theo (Jackson Robison), who offer a different role for Pippin to consider. The Leading Player, a dynamic, mysterious, magnetic master of ceremonies, portrayed by Julian Anderson, guides the players and the audience as he crafts the storyline.

Director, Ty Cedars is no stranger to City Park Players.  Ever since his first production of Little Shop of Horrors little more than a decade ago, he’s plunged deep into the waters of the theatrical community.  Lately, he’s been seen working with kids in Family Playhouse, trying to create a good mix of education and theatre.

Assisting Ty with music and choreography is newcomer, David Dabney, an Ohio native who comes to us as an Americorps VISTA member, stationed at LSUA, for a year.

Reservations are urged. Tickets are available for purchase at the box office before the show.  Ticket prices:  Adults $12 – Seniors (over 65) $10 - Students $5.  The Hearn Stage is located at 3rd & Johnston in Downtown Alexandria in the Rapides Foundation Bldg.  Discounted group ticket sales are available. LPAA Update
Well, we're down to the wire!  It is vital that funding for Statewide Arts Grants and Decentralized Arts Funding be restored to the budget in the Senate prior to being sent to the House for concurrence.  Everything is happening so quickly, we must react NOW.

Here’s the scenario.  It is likely that the budget will be debated and approved in the Senate on Friday.  At that point, it will be sent over to the House whose members will then have a chance to review it for changes made by the Senate after it left the House.  The House then has two options.  It can either concur, in which case the budget goes to the Governor for his signature OR it can vote not to accept, in which case it goes to the Joint Conference Committee made up of Senators and Representatives who will then hash out the differences and come to an agreement.

What does this mean for us?  Should the House concur with the Senate version of the budget and WITHOUT the Statewide Arts Grants funds and the Decentralized Arts Funding monies being restored in the Senate, then we WILL NOT have another chance and the Decentralized Arts Funding budget will end up at $1,444,557 as opposed to $2,515,120 last year.  Statewide Arts Grants will end up at $339,745 as opposed to $2,316,482 last year.  Do the math!  That’s a $3,047,303 combined DECREASE from last year that basically guts the Statewide Arts Grants that fund our state’s symphonies, ballets, museums, theatres, festivals, arts councils and artists.

That’s unacceptable but could be a reality if we don’t mount an all-out blitz on the Senate.  This is our best chance so please react now.  Go to www.lparts.org , type in your zip code under “Write Your Legislators” and click “GO.”  You’ll be taken to our “Action Alert” page where under “Louisiana” you should click on “Take Action” to be taken to the message to your Senator and the members of the Senate Finance Committee.  If you want to personalize the message with a personal experience or as a member of an arts organization that will be affected, please do so at the beginning of the message, but PLEASE do not change the balance of the message as written.

**If you are a board president or executive director of an organization, please forward this on to the members of your board.  Then ask them to forward it on to their friends, relatives and anyone else who wants to continue to enjoy the cultural and educational programs that we’ve all come to expect from our arts organizations.  You've done an amazing job this year by sending over 44,000 emails to our Louisiana House and Senate members.  We're leading the pack throughout the U.S. in number of emails being generated in support of our industry.  Hopefully this will be the last blitz of the session and we will be successful in restoring the funding.

Thanks in advance for your help!

Red River Jazz Band Presents
4th Annual USO Big Band Celebration: Remembering the Big Band Era

The Red River Jazz Band proudly presents the 2010 “USO Big Band Celebration: Remember the Big Band Era” on Sunday, June 27, 2010 at 3pm at the Coughlin-Saunders Performing Arts Center.  This show recaptures the memories and music from the 1930’s, 1940’s, and 1950’s when Big Bands were popular music entertainment and swing was the style.

This year’s show once again features a dance floor next to the stage for those interested in doing a little jitterbug to a good old fast tune or sway slowly to a nice ballad.  We will perform music by the great band leaders of the day; Glenn Miller, Tommy Dorsey, Duke Ellington, Benny Goodman - the list goes on and on.

Tickets are $10 for adults, $5 for seniors and students (grades k-12).  Any serviceman or woman attending the concert in uniform will receive free admission.  Tickets will be available at the box office one hour before the performance and in advance by calling 318-443-4718.
